Types of Poly Welding

There are three types of Poly Welding; Butt Fusion Welding, Electrofusion Welding & Extrusion Welding.

Butt Welding

Butt fusion welding is a common method for joining HDPE Pipe, especially larger lengths.  To do this, a butt welding machine is used to hold, scrape and heat the two pipe ends, before pressing them together hydraulically and holding them there until the join cools, welding the two ends together.

ElectroFusion Welding (EF Welding)

Electrofusion welding is a form of resistive implant welding used to join pipes.  A fitting with impanted metal coils is placed around two ends of pipes to be joined and current is passed through the coils is placed around two ends of pipes to be joined and current is passed through the coils.  Resistive heating of the coils melts small amounts of the pipe and fitting and upon solidification, a joint is formed.  It is most commonly used to join PE & PP pipes Electrofusion welding is the most common welding technique for joining PE pipe.

Electrofusion welding is beneficial becuase it does not require the operator to use dangerous or sophisticated equipment.  After some preparation, the electrofusion welder will guide the operator through the steps.  Welding heat and time is dependent on the type and size of the fitting.  All electrofusion fittings are not created equal - precise positioning of the energising coils of wire in each fitting ensures uniform melting for a strong joint and the minimisation of welding and cooling time.

Extrusion Welding

Extrusion welding is done with a hand tool, know as an extrusion welder.

Cadia has an extensive range of welding equipment and accessories for Butt welding or Electrofusion Welding to suit most jobs.
